What is TAN?

Tax deduction and collection Account number or TAN is a unique 10 digit alpha-numeric number allotted to those assesses who are required to deduct or collect tax at source.

Who are mandatorily required to have TAN?

Persons who are supposed to deduct or collect tax at source, are required to have a TAN.

Which form is to be submitted for getting a TAN?

Form-49B has been prescribed by the Income Tax Department for application of TAN.

Where can you get Form-49B?

You may download Form-49B from the Income Tax Department website or download it from website of NSDL- www.tin-nsdl.com. Alternatively, you can visit any nearby TIN facilitation centre and get a physical copy of form.

What is the prescribed fee for applying TAN in Form-49B?

  • The fee for processing the TAN application is Rs. 65 (Rs. 55 + 18% GST). This is a non-refundable fee. Payment can be made by a cheque/ demand draft in favour of NSDL-TIN. Fees may also be paid by debit card or credit card and net-banking.
  • The applicant should mention his/her name along with acknowledgment number of TAN application on the reverse side of demand draft/cheque.
  • In case, the applicant chooses to pay by credit/debit card, additional charge of 2%+GST shall be levied. If net-banking is chosen, additional charge will be Rs. 4+GST.

How to make an application for TAN allotment?

An application for allotment of TAN may either be made offline or online as below:-

  1. Online application: TAN application may be made online by visiting www.tin-nsdl.com. An acknowledgement will appear on screen on confirmation of correct uploading of the TAN application. The applicant needs to send copy of this acknowledgement to NSDL according to procedure as mentioned in above FAQs.
  2. Offline application: the applicant shall visit the nearby TIN facilitation centre and submit Form-49B in physical. No supporting documents are required in case of physical applications for TAN.

How is the tax deducted or collected by a deductor/collector deposited?

  • For tax deducted/collected in April-Feb:   7th day of next month
  • For tax deducted/collected in March:        30th April
